5 Ways to Refuel Your Entrepreneurial Spirit
/Hi Friend,
First, a personal note...
For the past two days, we have been digging out from over three feet of snow in New York -- that's well over our waist!
At the bottom of our steep driveway, the county plows made a nice wall of snow up to our chest.
When our plow guy called to say he didn't think his truck could do it, and all the other companies were slammed, it was a neighbor that showed up with a large tractor to bail us out. And he wouldn't take anything for his troubles.
Looks like he'll be getting a surprise goodie basket on his front porch by Christmas. And it won't be essential oils (my usual go-to gift) -- ha! More like local pepperoni and cheddar, Darn Tough brand wool socks (the best!) and some beer.
I'm about to go on a holiday break and intentionally log off for two weeks.
I'm not going anywhere but plan to take a mental break from email, client work and just rest up.
To wrap up the year, here are a few snippets from my December conversations with my business coaching clients.
May there be one thing in here that you take with you today and into the new year!
1) MINDSET: It takes above average self compassion to navigate your becoming.
In the early days of my coaching practice in 1999, I read the following short essay that I never forgot.
I think about it from time to time, when I'm in the middle of my next becoming and reminds me not to resist the messy parts that make me feel like quitting.
Here's the short essay that perfect for when you're creating something new in your business.
2) REFUEL: Explore different kinds of rest to help yourself show up for the hard parts
It turns out there 7 kinds of rest - from the spiritual, physical, mental, to the sensory related and more.
I was reminded of this after noticing that despite making quite an effort to get deep, restful sleep, and I was still feeling tired.
After a morning session of journaling to figure out what was up, it became quite clear I needed to find a way to experience "sensory rest".
The experience of being with my family 24/7 since April without solo-time to recharge has been a bit much.
At first, realizing this was depressing -- how am I going to get sensory rest THESE DAYS!
My kids homeschool, my husband and I both run our business from home, and there's no where to go.
With a little self coaching I decided to give myself a bit of inner space to let solutions come to me. And they did!
I'm currently working on turning a corner of room (that has a door!) for a mom sanctuary and it's been quite energizing to make the decision and find the things I need.
Here's a short article on the 7 different types of rest from Well + Good.
3) BEST PRACTICE: Create a positive association to marketing with functional music
Marketing steadily is a new thing for most of my clients and therefore a new habit to develop.
Some days it feels easy and fun and other days doubts seem to hold you back.
Rather than turn away from the doubts and let them chase you away from your calling, consider setting up an environment that pulls you forward and creates new, positive associations to marketing.
This is a powerful coaching concept that I also learned from the great Thomas Leonard in the early days of my coaching business.
Instead of relying only on myself, what could I set up in my environment that would naturally pull me toward my goals?
Hiring a coach is like creating such an environment.
And so is using functional music. Functional music is like functional nutrition for your brain and body.
Here are two resources:
1) I listen to Brain.fm during my Golden Hour (my mostly daily, one-hour marketing practice), especially when I don't feel like doing it.
My husband listens to this when he sits down to write his book.
I enjoy the "relaxed focus" track, but you probably have to try a few things to see what sounds you like .(I especially like the "cloudless day" track.)
Here's a link to try Brain.fm for free for one month.
2) I also love this Youtube Channel that offers beautiful relaxing music with specific musical frequencies for clearing energy, releasing inner blocks and more.
Here is one I love from this channel.
Both of these resources come in handy by making my marketing hour as pleasant as possible.
4) TRANSFORM: Dance with your fears, worries and resistance
It's totally normal to get stuck, feel uncertain or feel like worries overcome you in entrepreneurship from time to time.
The trick is to plan for it rather than make it mean you should stop, freeze or run away.
One tool that I've used for over 20 years to gently breakthrough my fears was the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as Tapping.
I recommend all my clients download the free Tapping Solution App and make it a practice to do quick, 10-minute tapping sessions when the big feels come up.
The Tapping Solution is part guided meditation + verbal reframing + gentle tapping on acupressure points to help release stress and loosen the grips of stressful thinking.
I like to do it right after lunch, as I noticed that if I lay down and do a 10-20 tapping session and give myself a short rest, I won't turn to mindless Facebook scrolling and stuffing my face with chocolate that doesn't actually restore me. Yes, you can rest DURING your work day!
And I especially love this right before bed, to help calm my anxious mind and allow myself to sleep more soundly.

5) REWIRE: This 11 Minute meditation does wonders for your mind, mood and memory
I recently shared this in the HLP MeWe Community I host, but thought to share it here as well.
I tend to revisit this practice in the dark winter months (at least here, in the Northeast) when it's easy to drift into overindulging into habits that make it hard to wake up early for much needed quiet time.
It's a Kundalini meditation that is like a inner sound healing for your brain and body. And you can be of any religious or spiritual tradition to enjoy this.
It's a unique combo of repeating a few words + finger movements and works best when done by 6am. I know! I know! But it's worth it.
Here's a short article that explains the instruction.
And here's where you can find this free 11 minute meditation for your mind, mood and memory on Amazon Music, Spotify and Youtube.
A few more end of the month / end of the year resources for you...

Here's to peace and plenty this holiday season!
