Efforting vs Results

efforting_vs_results.jpg

Have you ever met someone who is trying to work on their personal goal and you just know they are going about it all wrong.

As a former health coach, I can't help but see this when friends try to get healthy. I can't un-see it. LOL!

Of course, I don't mean in a weird judgmental way, but simply as an observation.

I'm sure you can relate, as 80% of my clients are in the life transformation field.

For example, a mom friend is trying to lose over 150 lbs by going to kick boxing class.

In her case, it will just make her hungrier and stronger, but it's not reversing the health markers she's trying to turn around.

She doesn't know that you can't out exercise your diet.

She thinks it's about calories.

She doesn't know that there is a sequence of steps that need to happen to create profound, long-lasting results.

The result: what's happening is she gets hungrier, eats more of the same and stays in the cycle of exerting effort with minimal return.

I've done it too when I was trapped in diet land as a young woman.

But now science has shown that is an outdated approach.

A similar thing happens in my clients' businesses.

  • Sometimes, a client gets turned around and starts working on things that keep them busy, but produce minimal returns.

  • Sometimes my clients get thrown off by life events that they just can't think straight anymore.

  • Sometimes this shows up in more subtle ways like trying to fix some minutiae in their marketing, when it's really a way of avoiding the get-in-front-of-new-eyeballs strategy that their business is desperately calling for.

  • Sometimes my clients will ask me what I call "looks right, feels wrong" questions.  It looks like a good marketing question, but if pursued will only serve to continue the "efforting", and will not yield the kind of results they're looking for. (Yeah, my own coaches have busted me on this too!)

I have to watch out for this on my clients' behalf.

And in myself!

Good thing I am on to this.

So this when this happens, I step in and firmly say "stop the madness."

We stop the efforting and reorient around ONE result to get to work on.

Just ONE THING.

It's usually the one thing they do not want to do but will have the most bang for their effort.

It's so simple, but it's just what you need when everything feels overly complicated, confusing or turned around.

Do you know what your one thing is?

Are you caught in the cycle of efforting when you just need to fix your message?

Have you nailed your message and now you keep tweaking your message instead of taking the show on the road? Your ONE THING could simply be a sane marketing plan.

In a world of too many options, too many ideas and not enough time to do them all, pause to figure out what is the one thing that would make all the other things much easier or totally irrelevant.

Just like you can out exercise a bad diet, you can't out market a bad message that lands with no one.

The good news is, people like you and I, with kids, family, and lots of real life things going on, we can totally do the ONE THING at a time thing in our business.

It's simple enough to be doable.

And what's doable is something you can become consistent at.

Sure, it will test your patience and the cultural addiction to busy work, but you can handle that.

Sure, it will test your desire to avoid feeling uncertain, but that's just entrepreneurship 101.

ONE THING at a time, will save your hiney and sanity every time.

The trick is to choose the next right thing for YOU and your business.

I'm ready to help whenever you are.
