Trust in Routines, Not in Confidence
/Hi Friend,
Everyone chases confidence in their small business or private practice from time to time.
It's totally normal because, in entrepreneurship, you are forced to learn new things and do new things - and very often IN PUBLIC.
And, doing new things brings up lots of questions, self-doubt and uncertainty.
Chasing confidence can look like...
Getting stuck on the continuing ed train -- > getting more and more certifications so you feel like you know enough... (hint: at least half the time you don't feel like you know what you're doing in entrepreneurship, no matter how many degrees you have)
Waiting -- > to feel absolutely sure that your next step is the right next step... (hint: you're never 100% sure!)
Freezing up or changing your mind -- > when you're about to press play on your idea... (Gah! My personal fav! LOL!)
I've done all of these things (many times!) and I bet you could add a few to the list too.
But here's what I've found to be way more effective than relying on self-confidence in business.
Create very simple routines that pull you forward!
I learned a long time ago that confidence is a fickle friend.
In fact, it's a terrible friend.
It comes and goes, sometimes shows up for the party and often cancels at the last minute. How rude!
And other times, confidence completely deserts you when you were feeling oh so close one hot minute ago.
Forget confidence.
I've been coaching for 22 years and it still comes and goes.
Instead, create simple, professional routines that act like anchors in your career.
Anchors that keep you from floating all over the place in your ideas and execution.
In a Happy Little Practice, you have to create your own structure, systems and routines to keep your mind focused and your actions steady.
Your routines will determine your results.
And your routines, if done right, can bring you peace of mind in a career that is completely made up by you.
Put your trust in your routines, not how you feel on any given day.
True story: Marie Kondo shared in her best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, that she never really felt that confident in herself.
This shocked me, given how uber successful she is.
Ms. Kondo went on to share that instead of relying on self confidence, she put confidence in her environment.
Thus, her passion for getting organized.
That's exactly what I mean.
Knowing what routines to implement helps your mental game and improves your results.
But most business routines are designed for men with wives taking care of their entire personal lives (and their children), or for business owners that want to scale up.
In Happy Little Practice, we keep it simple and doable for working moms.
I know for myself, if I show up for my routines on MOST days, I'm going to stay in business.
