6 Shifts for Having a Business and a Life (No More Mombots)
/Businesses do not grow in a vacuum, but it's often taught that way.
Historically, business building has been taught by dudes, speaking to other dudes, while wives/partners handled everything else: their children, vacation planning, summer camp plans, medical care, sick days, school plays and events, household maintenance, etc.
Well, I work with the wives/partners and they still do the lion's share of the household labor while running a business.
So here are some ideas for doing both and staying sane.
Six perspective shifts that have helped me and my clients take care of life AND run a boutique business.
1) Structure your business so you have energy left over at the end of the day.
Otherwise, you will turn into a Mombot and you will be miserable and constantly battling depletion.
2) Pace, in business, is yours to set.
Your pace is not set by society, not by me, not by what you used to be able to do pre-family life or in another career before you got sick, not what gurus do with a team and a big budget, and not what other people who have more time, money, energy or less challenging circumstances.
In Happy Little Practice, you set your own pace, and adjust your pace... speeding up, slowing down, to ultimately finding your own steady rate of progress that works for you.
3) Include your body in business decision making.
Your body wants you to be well and thrive. Listen to it.
Example: schedule client sessions when you are at your best, not when you think you should be available.
So if you don’t work well in the evenings, pick a clientele that can see you during your best hours.
This includes investing in your body to thrive in entrepreneurial life, like your business depends on it.
(In fact, handling a health toleration can be a powerful business tactic, and I teach this in the Happy Little Practice Club.)
4) When you start making money, outsource a key household task that depletes your life force.
This will help you feel more alive, more capable and helps level the playing field for women, especially working moms.
5) Engage in your work day differently.
Refuse to replicate corporate culture in your own business.
See yourself as a really successful artist rather than a CEO or manager.
6) Remember, this is about creating a HAPPY Little Practice
A little practice can be plenty big enough, be truly satisfying and make a real difference, when set up for peace AND profit (not just peace and not just profit).
I teach all of this in the Happy Little Practice Club.
