Running a Small Business with A Heavy Heart
/First, a personal note...
I made it to summer, but not without some tears, rage and sleepless nights.
How about you?
I wake up in the morning thinking about violence in schools, grocery stores and churches and it breaks my heart.
And I go to bed at night worrying.
And yet, I've had to find my way forward.
Here's what's helping me get involved AND continue to serve clients and market my business now.
1) It's an AND thing (not an either or thing)
I am getting involved in the way that I can.
I'm a PTO member for my local school district and we are discussing ways to help our school district.
AND I'm working on my business.
I remind myself that my life as a PTO mom and my life as a business owner, require me to stay awake and engaged, and yes, sometimes that's hard to do.
However, both connect me to people who dare to show up in a world where it's easy to go numb, check out and give up.
And that feels better than giving up.
This makes me feel less alone and more hopeful.
2) Setting boundaries around my worrying time
My worries were impacting my sleep.
So lately, I've had to go back to basics and remind myself that between 10am - 3pm I focus on work and only work, and put my temporary blinders on.
I do that by focusing on what my clients need and want to thrive.
I do that by focusing on what my potential clients need and want to hear from me to feel comfortable getting into my care.
And I do that by giving myself what I need and want to feel capable of doing all the above.
I don't always get it right, but it's saving my mind right now.
3) Including time for my body and joy DURING THE DAYTIME
In times of stress, I can easily forget this.
I'll leave my own needs for wellbeing and joy absolutely last and then that backfires.
(Revenge bedtime procrastination, anyone?)
So here I go again, making sure I'm doing my basics.
Like creating little moments of joy and wellbeing DURING THE DAY.
Walks, stretches, book club, a good movie, sitting under my red maple with my journal, potlucks, novels in the evenings, soft service ice cream after Little League games... it all keeps me going.
This stuff is rejuvenating and seems to increase my capacity to show up for my clients, my work and my marketing.
These little pockets of time, dedicated to my mental, emotional and physical wellbeing (before and after work hours), give me courage to show up for the hard things.
